MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Feb. 5, 2016) â€" Opening day brought clear skies and sunshine, but the Milligan College baseball team fell twice to visiting Georgetown College, 9-5 and 5-0, Friday afternoon in a season-opening doubleheader at Anglin Field.
ÂÂ
Milligan (0-2) had the early lead in game one and kept it close through the early innings of game two, but suffered from a lack of offense in both.
ÂÂ
Sophomore
Bryan Soto was one of the bright spots at the plate, smacking a two-out double in the third inning of game one and hitting a two-run homer over the left field fence in the sixth as part of a 2-for-6 day.
Andrew Copas added some more offense with a double of his own in the third inning of game two.
ÂÂ
Soto's and Copas' third-inning doubles were part of a lead-changing effort the Buffs made in the season opener. The Buffs went ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the third after Copas doubled down the right field line, but it was Georgetown's four-run fourth inning which proved to be the difference as the Tigers won it 9-5.
ÂÂ
Starting pitcher
Codie Campbell, an All-Conference selection in 2015, suffered the loss with a home run by Georgetown right fielder Nicholas Lugo giving the Tigers the lead for good. Lugo's homer made it 4-3 and the Tigers added two more in the inning to go ahead 6-3 when Campbell made his exit.
ÂÂ
Campbell's final line was 4.1 innings, seven hits, four earned runs, four walks and a strikeout. His counterpart Michael Conrad went five innings and allowed three hits, three runs and two walks while striking out eight.
ÂÂ
Austin Perry made the start in game two and kept it a one-run game through the first three innings, but Georgetown added two in the fourth and one in the fifth and sixth. Perry struck out five and walked three in five and two-thirds innings.
ÂÂ
Milligan and Georgetown will finish the series on Saturday with another doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. After that, the Buffs are on the road next Friday-Saturday, Feb. 12-13, for a four-game series against Brewton-Parker College.
