Five score in double figures as No. 21 Buffs win high scoring affair

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 6, 2016) â€" The Buffaloes scored at least 21 points in every quarter and enjoyed one of their hottest shooting nights of the season as the Milligan College women's basketball team came out on top, 95-88, over Union College Saturday evening inside Robsion Arena.

The win improved Milligan's record to 20-5 overall and 14-2 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, while Union fell to 13-10 and 8-7. After entering this season tied 12-12 in their all-time series with the Bulldogs, the Buffs now control a 14-12 lead in the rivalry. Additionally, the Buffs have won 20 games overall and 14 conference games for the first time since 2012-13 when they went 23-10 overall and 16-2 in the league.

It was the highest scoring game of the season so far for Milligan, and featured four Buffs with 15 points, two with 10 made free throws, and two with three 3-pointers. Additionally, the Buffs captured their sixth sweep of the season overall and fifth in AAC action.

Allison Jones led the Buffs with 19 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the free throw line, marking her fifth game of 19 or more points in the last eight games. Callie Cox was next with 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point range. Lindsee Price had 15 points while going a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe, and Kelly Barnett also had 15 points on 3-of-4 shots from behind the arc. Price's 15 points tied her career high while her 10 made free throws bested her previous career best of seven.

Sarah Robinson added 11 points and eight rebounds, Barnett also had eight boards, setting a career high, and Price had seven. Price had her second straight game with at least 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Milligan dished out 20 assists for the second straight game.

The Buffs got off to a great start in this one offensively, leading 8-0 early after threes by Barnett and Price, then 11-3 after a three by Cox. After Milligan took its third eight-point lead of the first quarter at 17-9 after a fast break score by Robinson, a 7-0 Bulldogs' run cut the margin to one.

The Buffs then jumped ahead by five in the second quarter before another 7-0 Bulldogs' stretch gave Union its first lead of the game at 25-23. The two teams then traded leads and stayed close and neither squad led by more than five for the next 15:45 of clock time.

Despite the plethora of scoring, neither team was able to take control until an 11-0 run by the Buffs over a three and a half minute span toward the end of the third quarter broke a 58-58 tie and made it 69-58 with a minute and a half left in the third quarter. Jones scored four points during the run for Milligan while Cox and Caitlyn Cain were both responsible for three.

After the Bulldogs made it a one-possession game at 76-74 thanks to a 3-pointer by Nannilena White just over four minutes into the final quarter, Milligan scored six straight points over the next two minutes to go up eight, then never saw its lead sink below five the rest of the way. Jones was 4-for-4 from the free throw line during the 6-0 stretch.

The second leading scorer in the AAC, Lydia Nash, led Union with a game-high 23 points, while White had 20 points and eight assists. Lastly, Haley Perkins had a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 10 boards.
