Softball comes up just short in game two, splits with TWC

ATHENS, Tenn. (March 22, 2016) â€" After winning the Appalachian Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week award for the second time this season for her effort last week, Jessica Goodson was instrumental in the Milligan College softball team's split with Tennessee Wesleyan College Tuesday afternoon at the Athens Regional Park. The Buffaloes won game one 6-2 before falling in eight innings in game two, 9-8.

Milligan (16-8 overall, 4-2 AAC), used the win in game one to match its longest win streak since the Buffs won eight consecutive games in March of 2014. The win was also the Buffs' 12th win in 14 games (now 12 of 15), and snapped Tennessee Wesleyan's (11-10, 6-2) three-game win streak.

Goodson (7-4) earned both a win and a loss on the day as she pitched 6.1 innings of six-hit, five-strikeout ball in game one, but gave up the winning run in the bottom of the eighth in game two.

At the plate, the trio of Natalie Sheffey, Jessica Connatser and Jessica Wheelock each finished with two hits in each of the two games. Connatser was 2-for-3 in game one and 2-for-4 in game two while Sheffey and Wheelock were 2-for-4 in both games.

Milligan crossed the plate in each of the first two innings in the opener, and then added runs in the fourth and fifth before scoring twice in the sixth to put it away. In the latter game, the Buffs used all four of their pitchers as Kassi Butcher, who finished up the final two outs of game one, got the start.

Down 2-1 after one inning, Kimberly Robinson entered in the second inning and gave up a Lady Bulldogs grand slam to widen the gap to 6-1. After Milligan scored twice in the fourth inning, Wesleyan answered with two runs in the fifth to make it 8-3.

The Buffs would not go down quietly, and scored five runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Ashley Arnold was 2-for-2 while Butcher went 1.2 innings, Robinson 1.1, Cayley Shoemaker three and Goodson two. It was, however, all for not as a wild throw down the right field line by Goodson on a bunt attempt with the international tiebreaker on second sealed Milligan's fate in game two.

Next up, Milligan travels to Bluefield, Virginia, on Thursday, March 24, to battle the Lady Rams of Bluefield College before returning home on Monday, March 28, to host the Columbia College Koalas. First pitch for the AAC doubleheaders is 1 and 2 p.m., respectively.
