BLUEFIELD, Va. (March 23, 2016) â€" Five Buffaloes recorded multiple hits and four scored more than once, but in the end, the Milligan College baseball team's 13 hits and 11 runs were not enough as it fell to Bluefield College, 12-11, in 10 innings Wednesday night at Bowen Field.
Despite the loss, Milligan (13-13, 7-2) remained the only team to defeat Bluefield (15-15, 3-6) at home so far this year, but also snapped its six-game winning streak over the Rams.
Shane Salley and
Andrew Copas both finished with a double while
Bryan Soto added a triple. Salley led the Buffs in hits with a 3-for-6 effort, and added three runs batted in and two runs scored. Salley RBI's, however, were not the most for the Buffs as
Andrew Copas was 2-for-4 with five RBI's.
Thomas Miller added two hits, while Soto had two hits and scored twice,
Hunter Townsend crossed the plate twice, and
Justin Pearson was the final Buff with two hits.
After scoring two runs in the top of the second, four in the top of the third and two in the top of the fourth, Milligan held an 8-3 advantage heading into the bottom half of the fourth. However, the Rams scored seven runs over the next two innings to go ahead 10-8.
Facing a one-run deficit in the top of the ninth, the Buffs scored twice to retake the lead at 11-10 before Bluefield pushed across the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth and 10th innings, respectively.
Jacob Littleton (2-1) took the loss by allowing the final two runs, only one of which was earned, in his 1.2 innings of action.
Milligan returns to Anglin Baseball Field next for a three-game series with Reinhardt University. The Buffs and the Eagles will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 23, before playing a nine-inning game on Saturday, March 24, at 12 p.m. Milligan will then travel to Dayton, Tennessee, to face the No. 20 Lions the following weekend on Friday-Saturday, April 1-2.
