Baseball splits series-opening doubleheader at St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C. (April 23, 2016) â€" Austin Perry pitched a complete game while getting some timely hitting from Hunter Suggs and Blake Dutton in game one, and the Milligan College baseball team split a doubleheader with St. Andrews University Saturday afternoon on the road. Milligan won game one 4-2 but lost game two 4-0.

Perry went all seven innings of the Appalachian Athletic Conference series opener, and allowed five hits, two runs and one earned run with no walks and six strikeouts. The two runs he surrendered came in the fifth inning and put St. Andrews on top, but Suggs and Dutton provided RBI's with two out in the sixth to give Milligan the lead for good. Suggs' base hit came in a bases-loaded situation and scored two, while Dutton's came in the next at-bat and scored the eventual winning run.

Tanner Peer followed in the seventh inning with an RBI double to right field to score Nate Clifton, pinch running for Hunter Townsend, and give Milligan some insurance. Peer and Andrew Copas both finished with multiple hits, including a double, in the contest.

Codie Campbell made the start on the bump in game two but fell victim to a three-run fourth inning and a quiet Milligan offense. He gave up back-to-back one-out hits to lead off the fourth, then let a double bring them both in. Wyatt Richardson and Jacob Littleton both pitched in relief, but both allowed an inherited runner to score as the Knights went up 4-0 through five.

After Milligan and St. Andrews close out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m., the Buffs have one more nonconference matchup on the road before finishing the regular season at home against No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan College. The AAC series with TWC is scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, April 30-May 1 on Anglin Field.
