Baseball season ends at hands of No. 21 Bryan's comeback

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (May 11, 2016) â€" The Buffaloes belted out 15 hits in the first six innings while all nine batters in the starting lineup recorded a hit and four had multiple hits through six, but the seventh-seeded Milligan College baseball team was done in by late scoring from No. 21 Bryan College in a one-run defeat, 6-5, during day three at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Wednesday at Hunter Wright Stadium.

Thomas Miller was 3-for-3 with a walk and a run batted in and Andrew Copas was 3-for-4 with a walk, a run and an RBI. Bryan Soto and Nate Clifton both added two hits on the day while Shane Salley scored twice and Blake Dutton walked twice.

The Buffs got off to a great start offensively with runs in each of the first two innings, both coming after starting two-out rallies. The first run came courtesy of a hit by pitch to Salley, a single to right by Soto and a single to right-center by Miller, while the second came in the form of a single to right by Hunter Suggs, a walk by Dutton and an RBI hit to center by Copas.

Six of Milligan's first eight hits were all to right field, a theme that started off the fourth inning as the Buffs used the five-hit frame to open up their lead to 5-0. After a Copas single to right, a triple to deep right-center field by Salley brought in Copas all the way around from first, and then a double by Soto off the left field wall scored Salley. Lastly, a hit to left by Clifton led to a play at the plate in which Soto's slide dislodged the ball away from the Lions' catcher for another run, which proved to be Milligan's final tally of the game.

Corey Jenkins had a 1-2-3 bottom of the first, and then watched his defense turn a 6-4-3 double play to end the second. Jenkins then worked his way out of a jam in the third with a pop out and a fly out to leave runners on first and third.

Jenkins complimented Milligan's good start offensively by limiting Bryan to only three hits, two walks, two total runs and one earned run through the first six innings. He used a 4-6-3 double play to finish the fifth and shut down Bryan 1-2-3 in the sixth before the Lions tied the game in the seventh. Jenkins exited with 6.2 innings of work and five hits, five runs, four earned, four walks and three strikeouts on his line.

Jacob Littleton entered to finish off the bottom of the seventh and recorded a punchout to leave the bags full of Lions. However, a two-out single to left-center, followed by two more singles gave Bryan the lead in the eighth as Littleton (4-2) was dealt the loss.

In the final two innings for Milligan, Miller reached base for the fifth time in the game to lead off the eighth, taking a hit by pitch before being stranded at third. Copas took a two-out walk in the ninth and Salley reached on an error to second to put both the tying and go-ahead runners on base, but a swinging strikeout on a 1-2 count ended the Buffs season.

In the end, Milligan, who left 17 runners on base on Wednesday, finished with an overall record of 22-31 and an AAC mark of 10-17, while Bryan advanced in the conference tournament at 38-17 and 18-9.
