Volleyball tops Truett, remains unbeaten at home

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 13, 2016) â€" The perfect home record and hot start to this season continued Tuesday night as the Milligan College volleyball team won an Appalachian Athletic Conference match against Truett-McConnell University 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-22) at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

Milligan (12-3, 3-0 AAC) won its 11th match in the last 12 tries and stayed perfect in both the AAC and at home (8-0). The Milligan win was also the seventh one to be decided in three sets and sent Truett-McConnell to 4-3 (0-3 AAC).

Seniors Grace Ann Moorhouse and Samantha Bruinius were honored prior to the match for reaching 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills, respectively, earlier this season, and the two had big nights against Truett. Moorhouse, who registered her 1,000th career dig against Shawnee State earlier this year, finished with 14 digs. Bruinius, who registered her 1,000th career kill against Pikeville, had 19 kills and 11 digs.

Freshman setter Kellee Geren earned 23 assists in the first two games before fellow sophomore Janae Rangel collected 10 in game three. The pair targeted nine Buffs for at least one kill.

Milligan, like the season, got off to a great start in the match, winning the first four points before opening up a 10-3 lead in the first game. The Buffs then carried that lead through the remainder of the opening frame.

In the second game, Milligan trailed 9-7 before going on an 11-2 run, highlighted by three Bruinius kills, to get out to a big lead, and not even a furious rally by Truett late in the second game could overcome it. After Truett trimmed the seven-point deficit to one, at 24-23, Hannah Griffin ended the set with a kill from the right side.

While the third set was much more back and forth, the end result proved to be the same as Milligan won the last three points to break a 22-22 tie and win the final game 25-22. Bruinius ended it with her third ace of the match.

Milligan will be home again on Thursday, Sept. 15, for a nonconference matchup with Cumberland University before hitting the road for six matches.
