Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Buffs win home opener in comeback fashion

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 6, 2016) â€" Milligan College's women's soccer team played its first home game of the 2016 season on Tuesday night against the Dalton State Roadrunners. After going scoreless in the first half and surrendering two goals early in the second, the Buffalo offense came alive and rallied for three unanswered goals to win 3-2.

Milligan (2-1-0, 0-0-0 AAC) dominated the first half but could not show it on the scoreboard. The Buffaloes were on the offensive and possessed the ball for the majority of the first 45 minutes. They outshot the Roadrunners 5-3 with opportunities in front of the goal.

Goalkeeper Charlotte Stephens played a strong first half, shutting out Dalton State with two saves.

Despite the strong play from the Buffaloes, it was scoreless at halftime.

The Roadrunners came out with a sense of urgency and dominated the possession in the beginning of the second half. They were able to get 11 shots off, whereas they only had three in the first half. Dalton State connected on two of those shots and built a comfortable 2-0 lead with less than 30 minutes to play.

Milligan got things back on track when Amy Long connected on a penalty kick to cut the deficit in half.

Just a few minutes later, Long connected again for her second goal of the game off of an assist from freshman Bekah Cundiff. The Dalton State lead had evaporated.

Keeping the momentum going, freshman Alyson McMillan gave the Buffaloes the first lead of the night when she scored her second goal of her career.

Behind six second half saves from Stephens, the Buffalo defense clamped down and kept the Roadrunners off the board for the rest of the way.

The underclassmen have shined early in the season, with 14 of the 18 goals scored and all three tonight being scored by freshmen or sophomores.

Milligan opens its conference schedule at home on Saturday against Columbia College. Game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
