CLEVELAND, Ga. (Jan. 28, 2017) â€" It took an extra five minutes to do it, but the Milligan College women's basketball team got its sixth straight win Saturday afternoon at Truett-McConnell University, topping the Bears 71-67 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference game.
ÂÂ
Hayley Wyrick and
Mackenzie Raizor led the Buffs in scoring with 14 points apiece, including combining for six of the team's seven overtime points. Raizor gave the Buffs the lead with a 2-point field goal with less than three minutes left before Wyrick helped put the game on ice with a 3-pointer with just over a minute left. Wyrick's triple put the Buffs up four and Milligan would close the game out at the free throw line, improving to 17-7 (13-3 AAC).
ÂÂ
At 13-3, Milligan is out front in the AAC with Reinhardt University, although the Buffs hold the tiebreaker over the Eagles with a head-to-head record of 2-0 this season. Milligan is also 2-0 against Truett after posting an 80-72 win at home prior to Thanksgiving.
ÂÂ
Milligan jumped out to a 5-0 lead in Saturday's OT win before expanding the advantage to 25-13 by the end of the first quarter.
Kelly Barnett helped cap the early run with a made 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the first frame. However, Truett then began to whittle away at the Milligan lead, eventually bringing it to within seven at the half, 39-32, and to within five at the end of the third quarter, 53-48.
ÂÂ
In fact, Milligan trailed by four with four minutes left in regulation. It took a
Lindsee Price steal and Barnett layup on a fast break with less than a minute left, then a couple of clutch free throws from
Sarah Robinson with 18 seconds left to force OT.
ÂÂ
Barnett and Robinson were next behind Wyrick and Raizor in the scoring column with nine points apiece. Robinson added a career high 18 rebounds, including a career high 16 on the defensive end. Raizor grabbed eight rebounds and Wyrick had six.
ÂÂ
