COCHRAN, Ga. (Feb. 25, 2017) â€" The Milligan College baseball team wrapped up a three game series against the Middle Georgia State University Knights on Saturday. In a tale of two games, game one featured a 10-0 loss for the Buffaloes, whereas game two was an extra-inning thriller with the Buffs on the losing end of a 14-13 decision.
ÂÂ
Milligan (5-9, 0-0 AAC) struggled in game one, failing to score and only had one runner reach third base. In the top of the fourth,
Ryan Young singled to left and stole second during the next at-bat.
Clayton Conner advanced Young to third on a groundball and gave the Buffs their best chance at a run. However, Knights starting pitcher Austin Bowker forced a groundout and a fly out to escape.
ÂÂ
Middle Georgia State put together a six-run inning in the bottom of the fifth and all but put the game away and went on to win game one 10-0.
ÂÂ
Game two followed a much different script from game one. The Milligan offense came alive and ended game one's scoring drought. In the top of the third, Brian Soto had runners on second and third with one out. Middle Georgia pitcher Chris Rich threw a wild pitch that allowed
Jascanel Ferreras to score from third and advanced Young to third. Soto reached on a walk and put runners on the corners. Two batters later,
William Oliver singled to right-center and scored Young. Next batter,
Andrew Copas singled and scored Soto from second to give Milligan a 4-0 lead.
ÂÂ
In the top of the sixth, the Buffs led 7-2 and gave themselves more cushion. Oliver tripled to right-center and scored Conner from third. Next batter, Copas singled to shallow right and drove in one of his three RBIs on the day. Milligan took a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth and appeared to have the game wrapped up.
ÂÂ
The Knights had other ideas and exploded for ten runs to take a 12-9 lead, their first lead of game two. They had eight singles and one double in the inning, scoring at least one run off of six of those hits.
ÂÂ
In the top of the seventh, Milligan trailed by three and was down to its last out before generating one last rally. A pair of walks and a misplayed grounder loaded up the bases and gave the Buffs a chance. During the next at-bat,
Juan Vasquez came up with one of the biggest hits of the day, doubling to deep left, emptying the bases and tied the game up at 12. Oliver continued his productive day during the next at-bat, singling to right-center, scoring Vasquez from third, and reestablishing the Buffalo lead.
ÂÂ
In the bottom of the seventh, the Knights responded immediately with a leadoff triple. During their next at-bat, Jesus Monserrat singled and tied the game up at 13-13.
ÂÂ
The tie-game lasted until the bottom of the tenth, when Middle Georgia runners on second and third with only one out. Buffalo reliever
Wyatt Richardson had escaped a jam in the top of the eighth when the Knights had bases loaded, but forced a groundout to keep them off the board. In the bottom of the tenth, a wild pitch allowed Middle Georgia's Luke Parks to score from third and end the game.
ÂÂ
After playing five of its last six games on the road, the Buffs return home for a doubleheader against Shawnee State University on Tuesday, Feb. 28. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
