Buffs slug their way to victory in Montreat series finale

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 20, 2017) â€" Starting with a Chris Patterson grand slam in the top of the third, the Milligan College baseball team hit four home runs on the way to a 17-4 victory over Montreat College Monday afternoon. Milligan won the Appalachian Athletic Conference series two games to one.

Milligan (14-13, 5-4 AAC) and Montreat (10-16, 1-8 AAC) played the first two games of the series Friday at Montreat, with the Cavaliers winning game one 6-4 but the Buffs bouncing back for a 10-7 win in game two.

Patterson was 2-for-4 with three runs and six RBI's on the evening. He accounted for two of the home runs, including a grand slam which broke the game open at 6-0 in the top of the third inning. Julian Johnson added to the home run count and to the lead later in the third with a two-run shot to make it 8-0, then a Patterson solo shot to center in the fourth and a two-run dinger to left from Ryan Young put the Buffs up even more.

On the hill, Chandler Daniels went the first four innings and allowed five hits, a walk and four earned runs to pick up the win. His only hiccups came in innings after a long wait where Milligan put up big numbers. Wyatt Richardson and Dustin Cole both pitched effectively in relief to close the game out. Richardson went two innings of scoreless baseball before Cole closed the seventh with a scoreless inning.

Milligan will be back home over the weekend when the Buffs host AAC opponent Point University in a three-game series. The teams will play a single game Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m.
