Baseball picks up a pair of wins in Ohio

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (March 28, 2017) - The Milligan College baseball team took a break from Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, traveling to Ohio to take on the Shawnee State Bears. While the run differentials were the same, the games followed two completely different scripts that resulted in a pair of victories for the Buffaloes. Milligan won game one 10-9 in an offensive affair and game two 1-0 thanks to a gem from starting pitcher Cameron Sauls.

Milligan (15-16, 5-7 AAC) took control of game one early, scoring all 10 runs in the first four innings and before the Bears scored their first run. After a lead off double from Jascanel Ferreras, Clayton Conner drove him home with a single to left and put the Buffs on the board. Later in the opening frame, Ryan Young singled to left and drove in a pair of runs to give Milligan a 3-0 lead.

In the next inning, a walk and a five-single hit parade resulted in five more runs for the Buffs. Conner singled and drove in a pair of runs for his second and third RBI's of the game. During the next at-bat, Juan Vasquez drove home a pair of runs as well and added to the Buffalo offensive explosion. The Buffs added a pair of runs during the third and fourth innings to take a seemingly insurmountable 10-0 lead.

However, the Bears had other ideas. After scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth from a Milligan error, a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth gave Shawnee State life. A pair of lead off walks set up Shawnee State's Chase Thurber for the three run blast and cut the lead to 10-5. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bears took advantage of a few Milligan errors and wild throws and cut the lead down to 10-9. With the tying run on first, Buffalo reliever Justin Morefield forced a fly out to end the Shawnee State rally.

Game two featured a fraction of the amount of offense as the Bears could not touch Sauls. Over the course of the seven inning shutout, Sauls allowed only two hits and three walks while striking out three Bears. He only needed one run of support from the Milligan offense and that came in the top of fifth inning. With two outs and Vasquez on second, Ferreras singled to left and scored Vasquez for the game's lone run.

The Buffs return to action with a three game series on the road at AAC rival No.5 ranked Tennessee Wesleyan. First pitch of game one is scheduled for Friday, March 31, at 3 p.m.
