Buffs fall to Bryan in AAC sweep

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 15, 2017) â€" The Milligan College baseball team wrapped up a three-game Appalachian Athletic Conference series against Bryan College Saturday afternoon at Anglin Field. An early lead proved not enough in game one as the Buffs fell 7-2 before being shut out in game two, 9-0.

Milligan, which was on a five-game winning streak entering the series, fell to 21-23 (9-12 AAC) while Bryan, which ranks No. 20 in the latest NAIA top 25 poll, improved to 30-13 (14-7 AAC).

Milligan starting pitcher Jacob Littleton was sharp early on in game one as the Buffs went out front early with a run in the first and another in the second to make it 2-0. Littleton got some help from his defense a couple of times to get out of jams in the first and third but otherwise threw effectively through the first four innings. He finished with a line of four innings, five hits, four runs, three earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts.

Two of Littleton's runs were scored on a home run off reliever Dustin Cole in the fifth inning which put the Lions in the lead for good. It made it 5-2, and the Lions added another two runs an inning later on a Milligan error.

Jascanel Ferreras provided most of the offense, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. He scored the game's first run in the first inning on a single to deep center field by Clayton Conner. An inning later, he drove in Hunter Suggs on a single to shallow center. Milligan looked to be in control at that point until the Lions got their offense going in the middle innings.

It was a similar story, minus the early lead for Milligan, in game two. The Buffs fell behind quickly as the Lions tagged starter Chandler Daniels with two runs in the first, two in the second, and two more in the third before Daniels saw an early exit. Austin Perry relieved Daniels in the third and pitched well in relief, finishing with a line of five innings, six hits, three runs (two earned), a walk and three strikeouts.

Offensively, Drew Patterson was the highlight in game two with a 2-for-3 effort starting in right field. One of his hits came on a triple to right-center field in the bottom of the fourth.

Next up, Milligan will be on the road for a doubleheader at University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday before returning home for a weekend AAC series against St. Andrews University next Friday-Saturday. The SAU series will mark the final home games of the season for the Buffs.?
