MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 2, 2017) - Both games were not decided until the final batter, but a pair of walk offs gave the Milligan College softball team a pair of wins over the Truett-McConnell Bears. The Buffs won game one 3-1, while game two was not decided until the 11th inning with the Buffs coming out on top 5-4.ÂÂ
Milligan (13-16, 8-10 AAC) struck first and controlled most of game one, starting things off with a first inning home run from
Jenna Gilbert. The Buffs were still threatening to score with runners on first and third and only one out. However, both runners were caught stealing for a double play and ended the inning.ÂÂ
Kim Robinson kept the Bears off the board for most of the game, pitching a complete game, striking out three, and allowing no earned runs. While Robinson shut down the Bears, Milligan created numerous opportunities throughout the game but could not execute. The Buffs outhit the Bears 12-3 and left six runners on base, including three in the second inning, but could not get any across which kept Truett-McConnell in the game.ÂÂ
In the top of the fifth, the Bears found their way onto the scoreboard with a sacrifice bunt and a wild throw, erasing the Milligan lead. The game remained tied heading into the bottom of the seventh and set things up for the day's first walk off. With one out and one runner on, Robinson sent a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence, securing the 3-1 win.ÂÂ
Similar to game one, game two's first run was a Milligan home run, this one coming off the bat of
Kacie Skeen, her team-leading sixth of the year. Truett-McConnell responded in the top of the third with a RBI single to tie things up. In the bottom of the fourth, Robinson picked up her third RBI of the day with a single by the shortstop, scoring
Kayla Baker.ÂÂ
The Buffs took their 2-1 lead to the top of the seventh and had the Bears down to their last strikeout. However, a RBI single up the middle scored Truett-McConnell's runner on third and tied the game. The game remained tied until the 10th inning, where the teams exchanged runs and kept the game tied. The Bears took the lead in the top of the 11th with a passed ball and took a 4-3 lead. In the bottom inning, the Buffs rallied for their second walk off of the day, starting with a RBI single from Baker. During the next at bat, a sacrifice bunt moved Baker to second and put the potential game winning run in scoring position. Kirstan Beaver then sent Baker home with a single to left, with Baker beating the throw home and securing the 5-4 win.ÂÂ
The Buffs return to action on Wednesday, April 5, when they host the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs on Anglin Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
