Late Union rally sinks Buffs in season finale

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (April 29, 2017) â€" The Milligan College baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a nine inning game three against the Union College Bulldogs. Despite having a 6-3 lead, the Buffs fell 10-8 due to a late five run rally by the Bulldogs. The loss locked Milligan into the No.7 spot in the Appalachian Athletic Conference standings.

The first three innings were back and forth and featured three lead changes and a tie. Milligan (23-27, 11-16 AAC) struck first in the opening frame when Bryan Soto singled to left, driving in his first of three RBI's on the day. Union immediately retaliated with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take its first lead of the game. The Buffs tied things up when back-to-back doubles from Hunter Suggs and Jascanel Ferreras led to the team's second run. In the third, Union retook the lead with a leadoff home run 3-2, a lead they held onto until the fifth.

In the top of the fifth, Suggs crossed home plate for the second time of the game when Clayton Conner singled to bring him home. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Soto singled to center and drove in his second and third RBI's of the day. In the top of the sixth, Milligan took a comfortable three run lead when Ferreras drove in a run with a sac fly.

Union chipped away at Milligan's lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth with five runs to retake the lead 10-7. In the top of the ninth, Milligan attempted one final rally. With the bases loaded and one out, Andrew Copas reached on a fielder's choice and scored Julian Johnson from third. With a runner on third and Copas representing the tying run on first, Union forced a ground out to end the rally and clinch the game 10-8.

Soto and Ferreras led the way on offense for Milligan, accounting for five of the team's eight runs. Copas, Conner, and Clifton all added one RBI each. Several Buffs saw action on the mound during the contest, but Chandler Daniels had the most productive day, pitching three shutout innings with two strikeouts and only allowed three hits.

Up next for Milligan is the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament, where the team will enter as the No.7 seed. The Buffs will take on No.2 seeded Point in the first round, scheduled for Wednesday, May 3. Times will be determined next week.
