Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer opens season with 1-1 draw

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Aug. 19, 2017) â€" Freshman Rhys Borror made a nice impact in his collegiate debut by opening the scoring for the Milligan College men's soccer team in the 37th minute. After a full 90 minutes along with two overtime periods, the Buffs finished the 2017 season opener in a 1-1 draw with University of the Cumberlands on Saturday afternoon at Anglin Field.

Borror scored from the left side in one of Milligan's first good scoring chances of the game, coming up with a loose ball inside the penalty area then finishing from close range. Senior Nick Smith played a crucial role in the game as well, tallying 11 saves and only one goal allowed. The goal he allowed went down as an own goal as a failed clearance on Milligan's back line ended with the ball in the back of the Buffaloes own net.

Among Smith's 11 saves, which were two shy of his career high, he had a few that saw him leave his feet. In the first half, Smith denied one Cumberlands chance on their first shot of the game. Cumberlands' Filip Milivojevic took a long range shot at the far post but Smith made a diving attempt to push it wide. Smith also had a great save in the final minutes of the contest as he pushed another one over the cross bar that was targeted for the upper 90.

Milligan (0-0-1) had a great opportunity of its own in the second overtime period. After a free kick from freshman Junior Nyamunda, junior Tayzere Arnott had a look at goal from close range but was denied by UC keeper Ahmed Ghatwary.

Collectively Milligan earned eight shots, including five on goal, in the contest. The Patriots took 15 shots, including 12 on goal.

Milligan will be on the road for the next game when the Buffs head to SCAD Savannah on Monday, Aug. 21, for a nonconference game. The next home game will be next Friday as the Buffs face Life University back on Anglin Field at 7 p.m.
