Women's basketball tops Montreat for AAC win

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 6, 2018) â€" Led by junior Sarah Robinson's third double-double of the season, the Milligan College women's basketball team got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon with a big win over Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Montreat College, 73-61.
 
Robinson scored 20 points and added 10 rebounds as Milligan (8-9, 4-7 AAC) pulled ahead by as many as 24 in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth quarter. Montreat (4-11, 3-7 AAC) scored the last six points of the game to trim the lead nearly to single digits but the Buffs held on for the win.
 
STATISTICAL LEADERS
Robinson was the only Buff in double figures in scoring, but 11 of the 13 Buffs to see action on Saturday scored at least one field goal. Kaely Gose was next after Robinson with nine points and seven rebounds; Emma Kate Brown scored eight while adding four rebounds; Teal Davis scored six with six rebounds; and five Buffs scored five points.
 
Milligan shot only 34.7 percent (26-75) from the field for the game but made up some of that difference with a 30 percent (9-30) effort from three and an 85.7 percent (12-14) effort from the free throw line. Robinson and Davis both connected on a pair of 3-pointers to lead the Buffs from the perimeter.
 
MILLIGAN'S FIRST HALF PUSH
Davis connected on one of her two 3-point attempts late in the first quarter to break the game's only tie at 10-10, then followed less than two minutes later to make it 19-10 as Milligan scored nine straight points to go into a big lead.
 
After flirting with a double-digit lead for the next 10 minutes, the Buffs went on a 6-0 run to end the first half ahead by 15 and led by double figures the rest of the way. Kasey Gordon ended the run with a breakaway and-one to make it 40-25.
 
FOR MONTREAT
Three Cavaliers made it to double figures, led by Jala Daniels who scored 12 with six rebounds. Hannah Calloway scored 11. As a team, Montreat shot 37 percent (20-54) from the floor and 38.1 percent (8-21) from three.
 
NEXT UP
Milligan travels to AAC foe Truett-McConnell University on Wednesday, Jan. 10, and St. Andrews University on Saturday, Jan. 13. The next home game for the Buffs is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 16, versus Bluefield College.
