MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 24, 2018) â€"
Amy Long put the Buffs on the board in the first half,
Ashlen Burch and
Macey Kennedy provided some cushion in the second half, and the Milligan College women's soccer team won 3-1 over Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Union College Wednesday on Anglin Field.
ÂÂ
It marked the fourth win in the last five matches for Milligan (7-6-1, 6-4 AAC) and moved the Buffaloes up two spots and into fourth place in the AAC. Long registered her goal in the 20th minute; Burch made it 2-0 in the 58th minute; and Kennedy made it 3-1 in the 87th minute.
ÂÂ
LONG OPENS SCORING ON FREE KICK
Long's goal broke the scoreless tie in the 20th minute following a play which saw
Bekah Cundiff draw a foul just outside the penalty area. Cundiff looked to break through the Union defense, but a foul awarded the Buffs a free kick near the top of the penalty area. Long buried it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
ÂÂ
BURCH DOUBLES LEAD IN SECOND HALF
Milligan continued to press the attack and broke through early in the second half when Burch, a freshman, scored after driving down the right side and sliding it past Union goalkeeper Hailee Hinthorne. The goal was Burch's second in the last two games and fifth of the season.
ÂÂ
Dharma Fawbush was credited the assist, her team co-leading fourth of the season.
ÂÂ
KENNEDY SEALS WIN LATE
Union battled back and threatened late, scoring in the 82nd minute on a goal from Maria Nylund. It cut the lead in half and put the Bulldogs well within striking distance until Kennedy sealed the deal with her second goal of the season in the closing minutes.
ÂÂ
Kennedy scored in a similar position as Burch, navigating her way through the Union defense, making a great move inside the penalty area to make a defender miss, then burying it into the top of the net to round out the scoring.
ÂÂ
BY THE NUMBERS
Milligan took 19 shots compared to 12 from Union. On goal, the Buffs held a 12-4 advantage. Both teams had two corner kick opportunities.
ÂÂ
Goalkeeper
Eva Bower made three saves to continue her recent run of form.
