Buffs drop game one of pool play at final site

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Nov. 27, 2018) â€" Elise Gregory registered her 400th kill of the season, but it was not enough as the Milligan College volleyball team dropped game one of pool play in straight sets (25-14, 25-14, 25-10) to No. 1 Grand View Tuesday afternoon inside the Tyson Events Center at the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship final site.

With the loss, Milligan (26-7) fell to 0-1 in Pool A while the Vikings (33-0) moved to 1-0. The Buffs are guaranteed two more games inside of Pool A and must finish as one of the top two teams to advance to single elimination championship play.

Milligan hung around early in the first set keeping themselves within striking distance until the Vikings used a 7-0 run to separate themselves from the Buffs and put the game away.

In the second frame, the Buffs were unable to get into a rhythm as Grand View jumped on top early with an 8-2 run in the second to cruise to a 25-14 win.

A 9-1 run to begin the third and final set was all Grand View needed to finish off the match as they rolled to a 25-10 win.

BY THE NUMBERS
Abby Falcone was setter, Kellee Geren's, top target on the day as she drove home a team-high six kills. Junior Alyssa Gibson and Gregory followed with five and four respectively. The four kills pushed Gregory over the 400 mark for the season, and the freshman also chipped in six digs defensively.

The junior setter, Geren, finished the match with 18 assists on the Buffs 19 kills.

Senior libero, Alyssa Rupert, scooped up a team-high 13 digs from the backrow and was followed by freshman Cameron McConnell who registered seven on the match.

Overall, Milligan was held below their season average in attack percentage as the Grand View defense proved to be too much. The Vikings recorded eight blocks to the Buffs three and also produced a .380 hitting percentage for the match.

Grand View, the 2018 Heart of America Conference regular season and tournament champions, was led by Kelsey Redmond who recorded a match-high 18 kills. Trystin Luneckas orchestrated the Vikings offense with 25 assists.
