ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (Nov. 3, 2018) â€" Freshman
Ashlen Burch scored two go-ahead goals, including a golden goal with 35 seconds left in the second overtime period to send the Milligan College women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Point University in the quarterfinals of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament Saturday afternoon.
ÂÂ
After leading 1-0 and 2-1, Milligan (10-6-1, 8-4 AAC) saw its lead disappear with less than four minutes left in regulation and its season in danger of ending as Point (9-9-1, 7-4-1 AAC) put on the pressure with several chances to score its own winner. However, the Buffs stayed resilient and found the match-winning goal when
Dharma Fawbush's corner kick connected with Burch in the box and Burch netted her team co-leading seventh goal of the season. It was Milligan's fifth straight win.
ÂÂ
SCORING HIGHLIGHTS
Burch scored both of her goals from close range. She scored her first goal early in the second half, in the 55th minute, after a scrambled play saw
Bekah Cundiff's would-be go-ahead goal denied by a block. Burch was there for the rebound and one-timed it into the back of the net to put Milligan up 2-1.
ÂÂ
Burch's second goal was also scored on a one-timer as she blasted a shot from near the penalty spot again into the back of the net, this time for a 3-2 win.
ÂÂ
Milligan's first goal came from on the penalty spot and put the Buffs up 1-0.
Amy Long scored it after a handball from Point in the box warranted a penalty kick.
ÂÂ
Point equalized in the 38th minute on a goal from Sonia Guadarrama, assist from Lara Vanessa, and again in the 87th minute, again from Guadarrama, with an assist from Cierra Binns.
ÂÂ
BY THE NUMBERS
Burch brought her season total to seven goals which matches Cundiff for the team lead. Long's goal was her third of the season. Fawbush's assist on the winner was her team-leading sixth assist of the year.
ÂÂ
Milligan and Point shared the possession and scoring chances nearly equally, with the Skyhawks outshooting the Buffs 22-16, including 11-10 on shots on goal. Point also held the advantage on corner kicks with seven compared to Milligan's four, although Milligan's last proved to be the difference.
ÂÂ
Defensively, goalkeeper
Eva Bower made nine saves while Point's Rachel Ash made seven.
