Buffs come from behind to take Union opener

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 5, 2018) â€" Senior Jascanel Ferreras went 2-for-4 with three RBI's to help the Milligan College baseball team erase a two-run deficit and win the opener of an Appalachian Athletic Conference series against Union College, 4-3, Thursday night at Anglin Field.

The win improved Milligan to 13-19 (7-9 AAC) as the Buffs have won five of the last six games, including winning the series last weekend at No. 9 Bryan.

FERRERAS' KEY HITS
Ferreras had an RBI single with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 3-2 game, then followed in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out single which scored two to give Milligan the lead, 4-3. The latter single scored Jake Weaver who was running for a Thomas Miller single and Hunter Suggs who had reached base on a bunt base hit.

Ferreras started the game 0-for-2 but came up big for the Buffs in two key situations.

BUFFS' KEY PITCHING
Outside of allowing a two-run homer in the top of the first, the Buffs' defense kept the Bulldogs relatively quiet. Sophomore Nathan Atkinson made the start and went the first two innings before handing things over to freshman left-hander Garrett Hartley. Hartley went the next five-plus innings, allowing only three hits in a scoreless relief effort.

Hartley faced the minimum from the third through the fifth, then escaped the sixth unscathed despite allowing the first two runners to reach base. Hartley went until there was one out in the eighth, handing things over to Jacob Littleton who recorded the last five outs.

Littleton picked up the save along with three strikeouts, also in a scoreless relief role.

STATISTICAL LEADERS
Camron Harper and Miller joined Ferreras in the multihit category, going 2-for-2 and 2-for-3, respectively. Harper drew a walk in the fifth inning, then came around to score on the Ferreras single which made it 3-2.

Hartley's final line was 5.1 innings, three hits, no runs, three walks and four strikeouts. He was the winning pitcher and improved to 3-3. Littleton's line was 1.2 innings, one hit, no runs, no walks and three strikeouts.
