MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 22, 2018) --
Amy Olvera scored in the 23rd minute and
Poppy Smith scored in the closing seconds of regulation to send the Milligan College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Montreat College Saturday evening on Anglin Field.
ÂÂ
Milligan (3-4-1, 2-2 AAC) dominated the match yet looked to be in line for only a one-goal decision until Smith found the back of the net with less than five seconds left on the clock. It marked her second goal of the season and doubled the lead Olvera had given the Buffs in the first half. Montreat fell to 2-3-2 overall (1-2-1 AAC).
ÂÂ
MILLIGAN'S DOMINATING NUMBERS
In addition to dominating the possession, Milligan led in every statistical category. The Buffs led the shot tally 21-3 and the shots on goal tally 7-0 while also taking all nine corner kicks in the game. Olvera and freshman
Ashlen Burch paced the attack with four shots apiece, and
Bekah Cundiff and
Madison Thomas took three shots apiece.
ÂÂ
Milligan's defense did not require much from goalkeeper
Eva Bower as the sophomore faced only three shots, none of which were on frame.
ÂÂ
CUNDIFF ASSISTS OLVERA, OILER ASSISTS SMITH
Olvera's first-half goal was made possible by Cundiff who found Olvera near the top of the penalty area midway through the opening period. Olvera received the pass and took one touch before burying it into the back of the net, off the hand of Montreat goalkeeper Landy Payton, for her third goal of the season.
ÂÂ
Similarly, Smith's goal was made possible by a pass from
Annika Oiler via set play. As time ticked down, Oiler's corner kick found Smith front and center inside the penalty area, and Smith made it count with one second left in regulation.
ÂÂ
The assists were Cundiff's and Oiler's first of the season.
