Buffs' winning streak snapped against Point

JOHNSON CITY , Tenn. (March 22, 2019) â€" Juan Vasquez and Chayse Frye both recorded three hits, but the Milligan College baseball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped against Point University Friday afternoon in the opener of a three-game Appalachian Athletic Conference series.

Milligan (9-13, 3-7 AAC) struck first with a run in the first, but Point (20-10, 5-5 AAC) responded with scoring in six innings, including four runs in the sixth which put the game away.

Among Vasquez's and Frye's hits, Vasquez doubled and scored in the first and doubled home Braden Jones in the fifth. Frye singled and scored in the sixth. It was all part of an effort where Milligan pushed runs across in four innings.

Wyatt Sowers (2-3) made the start on the mound and went the first 5 1/3 innings, but the freshman was tagged for six earned runs on 10 hits and three walks. Five Buffs saw time in relief, most notably freshman Blake Lucas who went 1 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings. Lucas walked only one and struck out one.

Point, which is receiving votes in the latest NAIA top 25 poll, did most of the damage in the sixth inning. The Skyhawks registered five hits in the frame, including four straight run-scoring hits.

Up next, Milligan and Point close out the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. back here at TVA Credit Union Stadium. After that, the Buffs will be on the road for the next five games.
