Buffs blast Bluefield for AAC sweep

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 29, 2019) â€" Four Buffs tallied multiple hits in game one before five Buffs tallied multiple hits in game two as the Milligan College softball team swept Bluefield College Friday evening at Anglin Field. Milligan (11-13, 9-7 AAC) won game one 10-2 in six innings and game two 17-3 in five innings.
 
Madison Grindstaff went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the opening game, including an RBI double in the third inning as part of Milligan's four-run surge which put the Buffs into its first big lead. Neelee Griffith, who was 2-for-3, drove in the first pair of runs for Milligan to make it 2-1 after the first frame.
 
Erin Forgety continued her dominant freshman season inside the circle with six strong innings. She struck out three and walked only one while scattering nine hits and two runs, only one of which was earned. Forgety conceded an unearned run in the first before allowing a solo homer in the sixth as her only blemishes.
 
Similar to game one, Milligan fell behind via an unearned run in the first inning of game two but again responded immediately. This time, it was a seven-run bottom half of the first inning, and the Buffaloes were in complete control from that point forward.
 
Kirstan Beaver smacked a one-out triple to make it 4-1, and Lindsey Slagle followed with a single to make it 5-1 before pitcher Kassi Butcher helped herself out with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-1.
 
Milligan continued to pour it on in game two. Ahead 9-1, Bluefield got two of the runs back with a two-run homer in the third, but the Buffs answered in the fourth with another seven-spot.
 
For the day, Griffith was 4-for-5 with five RBI's, three doubles and three runs. Savannah Nocera was 4-for-5 with five runs, four RBI's and two triples. Grindstaff was 4-for-7 with three RBI's and three runs. Milligan posted 26 hits across the two games, including 10 extra base hits.
 
Up next, Milligan continues its current 10-game homestand with another AAC doubleheader Saturday against St. Andrews University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Anglin Field.
