Buffs finish off St. Andrews for three-game sweep

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 23, 2019) â€" William Oliver hit a three-run homer, and the Milligan College baseball team weathered a late scare to complete a three-game Appalachian Athletic Conference sweep of St. Andrews University with a 13-9 win Tuesday on Anglin Field.

Oliver's homer, his third of the season, came in the third inning and put the Buffs (19-22, 10-14 AAC) into the lead for good. It helped the Buffs answer a two-run inning from St. Andrews in the top half, as the Knights scored their first runs of the three-game set and tied the game at 2-2.

Following Oliver's home run, Milligan put up runs in the next two innings, including three runs in the fifth to make it 9-3. Oliver was a part of the scoring in the fifth as well, reaching on a single to left field to lead the inning off, then scoring with Tyler Dimon on a Will Queen single up the middle. Queen, too, would come around to score on a Chance Hall base hit through the left side.

With the score 9-3 in favor of Milligan, the game looked to be out of reach until St. Andrews (20-26, 5-19 AAC) punched across four runs and had the tying run on first base in the eighth inning. However, Hall struck out Knights shortstop Noah Lawson looking to end the frame, and the Buffs scored four runs of their own in the bottom half.

Kirby Smith smacked a two-run double to highlight the scoring in the Buffs' final at-bat.

Five Buffs produced multiple hits in the win, including Juan Vasquez and Hall who both went 3-for-5. In fact, the pair put the Buffs on the scoreboard with back-to-back two-out triples in the first inning.

On the mound, senior Wyatt Richardson picked up his second win of the season with 2 2/3 innings of relief. Richardson allowed only three hits and struck out three, finishing off the fifth inning and working his way into the eighth. Hall, Andrew Smith and Luke Veltri also pitched in relief of starter Wyatt Sowers, who went the first 4 2/3 innings giving up six hits and three earned runs.

Up next, Milligan travels to Barbourville, Kentucky, for a three-game AAC set at Union College this weekend. It will mark the last games of the regular season for the Buffs.
