Forgety, Buffs upset Union to advance in AAC tourney

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (April 25, 2019) â€" Freshman Erin Forgety threw her 13th complete game of the season, sophomore Savannah Nocera drove in the winning run in the seventh inning, and Milligan College's softball team rallied from behind to defeat Union College, 2-1, and stay alive in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament Thursday at Brickyard Park.

Forgety faced only five over the minimum and retired the last 12 batters she faced as Milligan (18-17, 16-10 AAC) upset second-seeded Union in an elimination game. Forgety, coming off five innings of work in Wednesday's opening-round loss to Tennessee Wesleyan, allowed only five hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out one in Thursday's win. Milligan now will face either top seeded Truett McConnell or fourth-seeded Brenau Friday.

The last base runner Forgety allowed led off the bottom of the fourth inning on a double to right field after Milligan had tied the game 1-1 in the top half on a Karsten Miller RBI double. Forgety coaxed three infield outs to finish the fourth inning with the go-ahead run on third base, then set the Bulldogs down in order in three perfect frames across the fifth, sixth and seventh.

Milligan took the lead in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Nocera, making it 2-1. It followed the first three reaching to lead the inning off, as Lindsey Slagle (walk), Madison Cook (single) and Madison Grindstaff (bunt single) loaded the bases with nobody out. Cook finished the game with two hits to lead Milligan's offense.

Friday's game time is slated for 11 a.m., although the threat of rain in the area could push games back. For the most up to date schedule information, visit Milligan's softball schedule page through milliganbuffs.com or the AAC tournament site through aacsports.com.
