Forgety shines, Buffs split No. 23 Wesleyan

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 6, 2019) â€" Freshman Erin Forgety slung her second shutout of the season, and the Milligan College softball team split a twin bill with No. 23 Tennessee Wesleyan University Saturday on Anglin Field. Milligan won the first game, 2-0, but fell in the second game, 3-0.

Forgety struck out six with no walks in her 10th complete game of the season, a three-hit masterpiece which saw Milligan (15-15, 13-9 AAC) defeat a national top-25 team for the second time this season. Forgety faced only three over the minimum and did not allow a runner past first base through the first five innings. Tennessee Wesleyan (23-5, 20-4 AAC) put its only runner past first in the sixth, following a leadoff single and sacrifice bunt, but Forgety answered by retiring the last six to finish the game.

Jaclyn Jenkins provided Milligan with both runs on the offensive end. In the bottom of the second, she drove home Madison Grindstaff on a single up the middle. In the bottom of the fourth, she doubled the lead with a sacrifice fly to score Savannah Nocera.

Erica Roller and Neelee Griffith led the Buffs at the plate in game one, each going 2-for-3.

Milligan posted 11 hits on the day, but only three of them came in the second game. Grindstaff, Jenkins and Kayla Baker provided them, but Tennessee Wesleyan scored early and kept the Buffs off the scoreboard on the way to splitting the doubleheader. In the first inning, the Bulldogs scored one on a double down the left field line before a wild pitch brought a second run home. In the fifth, a two-out single scored a runner from second to make it 3-0 and round out the scoring.

Forgety's effort in game one moved her to 8-7 on the season. Kassi Butcher made the start in game two but suffered the loss, moving to 7-6. Butcher (4-2/3 innings) shared the load with Kendyl McCollister (2-1/3 innings).

Up next, Milligan travels to Waleska, Georgia, for an AAC doubleheader at Reinhardt University Wednesday, April 10, at 2 p.m. The next home game for the Buffs will be the home finale, scheduled for Saturday, April 13, against Brenau University.
