Women's Soccer falls at TWU in AAC opener

ATHENS, Tenn. (September 10, 2022) – The Milligan University women's soccer team dropped its Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) opener at Tennessee Wesleyan 4-0 on Saturday evening.

TWU rose to 2-2, 1-0 AAC with the win and the Buffs fell to 1-2-1, 0-1 AAC.

Tennessee Wesleyan scored the game's opening goal in the 21st minute. The Bulldogs intercepted a Milligan pass in the Buffs' defensive third, centered the ball and tucked a well-struck shot under the crossbar and into the net.

The Bulldogs fired another shot from a similar distance in the 34th minute, but Lauren Davies made a leaping save to preserve the 1-0 margin.

In the final minute of the first half, TWU lofted a high-arcing shot from just inside midfield and it dropped into the goal to give the hosts a 2-0 edge heading into the halftime break.

The Buffs earned a pair of corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the second half but could not convert the attempt into a shot. In the 55th minute, Autumn Daniels lined up a long-range attempt that sailed just high of the crossbar.

After a Milligan corner kick in the 58th minute was cleared quickly by TWU, a slide tackle by Mariah Shull thwarted a potential a one-on-one situation for an attacking Bulldog player.

TWU extended its lead to 3-0 with a tally in the 70th minute, collected its fourth goal in the 78th and its final score in the 88th.

The Bulldogs outshot Milligan 22-6 and owned a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Taylor Dawson and Kelsey Miller each had two shots for the Buffs.

Milligan continues AAC play Wednesday at Union.
