Softball sweeps St. Andrews on senior day

MILLIGAN, Tenn. (March 11, 2023) – The Milligan University softball team swept St. Andrews in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader on senior day at Anglin Field on Saturday afternoon. The Buffs downed the Knights 13-3 in game one and 10-5 in game two.

Milligan moves to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in AAC play. St. Andrews falls to 6-16, 1-7 AAC. The Buffs went 6-2 in four conference doubleheaders this week.

Game 1 – Milligan 13, St. Andrews 3 (5 innings)

The Buffs jumped out to an 11-0 lead over the first two innings. Erin Forgety did not allow a hit in htree innings of work as the Buff lead grew to 13-0 going into the fourth inning. The Knights scored three runs in the fifth but Bree Presnell worked a scoreless fifth to secure a run-rule victory.

Eight different players had a hit for the Buffs. Layney Loyd went 3-3 and scored three runs. Katie Cronin and Grace Jones had two hits apiece. Jones scored three runs, Cronin and Hanna Taylor each dove in a pair.

Game 2 – Milligan 10, St. Andrews 5

St. Andrews scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning but the Buffs quickly took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second. Bailey Cantrell drove in Jones in the first. Jones scored Alexis Brown with a groundout in the second and Cronin gave the Buffs the lead with a two-run triple to right-center field.

A six-run fourth inning extended Milligan's lead to 10-2. Cronin had another two-RBI triple, Kate Pendleton had a run-scoring single and Brown brought home two runs with a double.

St. Andrews prevented another run-rule victory for the Buffs with three runs in the fifth but could get no closer than the final 10-5 margin.

Pendleton was the winning pitcher with two unearned runs in six innings. She struck out six in her fourth win of the year.

Jones reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Cronin drove in four runs with two triples. Brown had three hits, including a double and two RBI. Hadley York and Miranda Millington each scored twice.

The Buffs return to action on Thursday when Milligan hosts No. 18 Tennessee Wesleyan for an AAC doubleheader.
