MILLIGAN, Tenn. (March 14, 2024) - The Milligan University baseball team and the University of Pikeville split their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader on Thursday.
The split puts the Buffaloes at 17-8 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
The teams will wrap up the AAC series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Game 1 - Pikeville 7, Milligan 3 (10 innings)
Milligan appeared to be on its way to a 2-1 win, but Pikeville scratched out a run in the eighth to even the ledger. After a scoreless ninth, Pikeville rallied for five runs in the top of the 10th.
The Buffaloes tried to mount a comeback, cutting the margin to 7-3 on a Vasili Kaloudis run-scoring single. But Milligan could not pull any closer as Pikeville escaped with the win.
Caleb Berry went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, while Angel Lobo was 2-of-5 with a run scored.
The Buffaloes outhit the Bears 8-7.
Game 2 - Milligan 7, Pikeville 1
Milligan jumped out to the early advantage with a three-run rally in the first. Pikeville came back with a run in the second, but Milligan rallied for four in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
In the fourth, a wild pitch allowed the first run to score, and then an error extended the inning resulting in three more Buffalo runs. Gaven Jones delivered the big blow with a two-run double.
Jones finished with three RBI.
Anfernee Fernandez posted the complete-game victory, allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk with nine strikeouts.
