WISE, Va. – The Milligan University men's tennis team went to Wise, Va. for a pair of matchups with NCAA foes in Southern Virginia and UVA Wise. UVA Wise was the host of both matchups, as the games were played on their campus. Milligan won the first matchup of the afternoon with ease, cruising to a 7-0 victory over Southern Virginia, but they dropped their latter tilt against the hosts, losing 5-2. The split on the day puts the Buffaloes at 2-1 overall this fall.
The doubles battles against Southern Virginia went positively for the Buffaloes, as they won two out of three.
Brayden Kennedy and
Tomas Tenil scored a simple 6-0 victory in the first doubles match.
Brandon Latta and
Bryant Morales would fall 6-3 in the No. 2 battle before
Thiago Petry and
Michal Curlej scored a 6-2 win in the third bout to clinch the doubles point for Milligan.
In singles, the Buffs had very little trouble with Southern Virginia, as no Milligan player lost more than three games in a set in six two-set wins for Milligan by
Phil Schollhorn,
Martin Mercarder, Tenil, Morales,
Enzo Bardin and
Matias Angulo.
Milligan's second match of the day was much more challenging, but the Buffs were able to snag the doubles point after victories were clinched by Petry and Curlej (6-3) and Kennedy and Tenil (6-3) in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles contests.
Singles was another story, as the Buffs scored just one win via Petry. He came away with a strong 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 5 singles battle.
Gonzaga Lafarga, Schollhorn, Curlej, Mercarder and Kennedy dropped their respective battles.
Milligan will now host Montreat (N.C.) at the Mathis Tennis Center Saturday Oct. 25, at 3 p.m. This matchup on Homecoming weekend will get them ready for the UTR National Singles Tournament in Rome, Ga., which is the final event for Milligan during the fall portion of their campaign.
