MILLIGAN, Tenn. — The (RV) Milligan men's soccer team hosted Truett McConnell University (Ga.) on Monday evening for a game that had been rescheduled due to weather. After getting out to an early 1-0 lead, the Buffs conceded two second half goals, including a heartbreaking tally in the 89th minute to eventually fall 2-1.
Milligan's record for the season drops to 7-3-1, 6-2-0 AAC, while Truett-McConnell goes to 7-3-1, 5-1-1 AAC. The Bears capture second place in the AAC with the victory, while the Buffs fall to third.
Milligan found opportunities early in the first half, as they had a shot off the boot of
Federico Confaloni and an attempt off the head of
Youseff Heggy saved by the TMU goalie. Nearing the end of the first half, in the 31st minute,
Justin Madejski sent a pass along the sideline that made it through the feet of a Bears defender and found
Kerim Akpinar, who drove past the remaining defender and took a shot that rolled across the goal box into the back of the net to give the Buffs a 1-0 lead. Truett McConnell had a shot attempt blocked at the end of half giving Milligan the momentum heading into halftime and a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, it was back and forth pressure from both sides, until the Bears scored an equalizing goal. Following the goal, it was a mad dash from both sides to break the tie. Akpinar had two shots less than two minutes apart that were promising but did not find the back of the net. Nearing the end of the game, Heggy also had a pair of shots that missed high and left. With only a minute-and-a-half left in the game that was heading for a tie, the Bears got behind the exhausted Buffs defense and scored a stunning goal. The Buffs used all the energy they had left to try and tie the game, but were unable to get a shot and fell 2-1.
Akpinar took five of the Buffs' 12 shots in the match and notched only Milligan goal in the matchup. Heggy added three with one on goal,
Mavroudis Katsantonis added two, while
Johnny Salgado and Confaloni each added one, respectively.
Adria Alles played well, stopping nine of the eleven shots that he faced in the bout, and his record now matches the 7-3-1 season mark for the Buffs.
Next on the docket for Milligan is a trip to Black Mountain, N.C. with the Montreat on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
