ATHENS, Tenn. – The No. 3-seeded Milligan University's women's soccer squad hit the road to face the No. 2-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs in Athens, Tenn. It was a vastly important contest for the Buffaloes, as they had a chance to clinch both a trip to the AAC Tournament Final and an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament First Round. Unfortunately, MU could not capitalize on any of their opportunities and fell to the Bulldogs, 1-0.
Not a lot occurred in terms of opportunities in the opening half. In fact, only four combined shots were taken in the period, including the one that led to the match's only tally. In the 26th minute, a Tennessee Wesleyan cross ended up being shot on frame and deflecting off the gloves of
Emily Robinson into the bottom-right corner of the net past a sliding
Mariah Shull. That goal made it 1-0 at the intermission.
Milligan had a few shots in the second half, and one on goal in the late moments of the contest from
Katelyn Penner, but the battle was mostly controlled by TWU. The Buffaloes trailed 10-4 in shots at the conclusion of the game and allowed a staggering 18-3 corner kick advantage for the home squad.
Penner and
Natalie Roper combined to evenly split all four shot attempts taken by the Buffs in the battle, as Penner's 88th minute strike on frame was the only shot on net for MU in the contest.
Robinson faced just three shots on net, as the Buffaloes did a nice job limiting genuine scoring opportunities in the tilt. She stopped two of those three tries. Her season record sits at 10-4-3 in her first season as a Buffalo.
It will be all up to the NAIA selection committee to decide whether the Lady Buffs will be considered for the NAIA National Tournament as an At-Large. That selection show will be on the NAIA YouTube page on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
