Milligan Baseball Struggles in Series-Opening Loss at CIU

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Friday evening's Milligan baseball contest at Columbia International to open the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) weekend series was not what the Buffs had in mind. The host Rams scored a dominant 13-3 run-rule win in seven innings to begin the three-game set.

Milligan scored first, bringing home a tally on a steal of third base by Skyler Saunders, followed by a throwing error that allowed him to score.

The response was swift, as CIU grabbed three tallies in the bottom of the first. A fielding error, a double play and a passed ball allowed the trio of runs.

After failing to score in the top of the second, the Buffaloes surrendered five runs in the bottom of the second. An RBI single and a grand slam made it 8-1 for the hosts.

A scoreless third and top of the fourth led the game into the bottom of inning number four, when the Rams added on four more runs. A two-run double to right field and a two-run round-tripper made it a daunting 12-1 deficit for Milligan.

The Buffs would score twice in the top of the fifth to finally get back on the scoreboard. A Brody Melton double brought home Saunders, and a Nick Iezzi single scored Melton to make it 12-3.

CIU got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 13-3 on an RBI triple, which is where the score would remain for the remainder of the run-rule shortened seven-inning contest.

Cade Kalehuawehe was on base in all four of his plate appearances, gathering two singles and two walks. Iezzi, Melton and Angel Lobo each had one hit, making up the five total hits for the team in their loss.

It was a tough day on the hill for Canyon Geren, who allowed 11 runs (eight earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings, while striking out four and walking three. Brycen Denton then relieved Geren for 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits. The final 1.1 frames were tossed by Brady Thomas, as he allowed just one hit and struck out two.

The Buffaloes will have the opportunity to right the ship on Saturday in their doubleheader matchups with the Rams, which will start at noon.
