Buffaloes Women's Volleyball Drops Two Matches at Mobile Tournament

MOBILE, Ala. – Milligan University women's volleyball's weekend in Mobile, Ala. began on Friday afternoon, as the Buffs matched up with the Dillard University (La.) Bleu Devils and the University of Mobile Rams. In both bouts, the Buffaloes fell by 3-0 margins.

Following the two contests, Milligan is now 0-6 on the young campaign.

Game 1 – Dillard 3, Milligan 0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-18)

After falling behind 7-2 through the match's first nine points, the Buffs could not recover, finishing the set with a 25-14 loss to begin their tournament.

Milligan trailed just 11-9 through 20 points in the second set, but Dillard pulled away, taking a 20-12 lead before the Buffaloes fought back to a 25-20 defeat in the second set to fall down 2-0.

Following a 7-3 deficit to start the third set, the Buffs went on an 8-0 scoring run, which put them up 11-7. The Bleu Devils battled back for the next four points to tie things at 11-11. The two squads traded points until it was 16-16, but Dillard then scored nine of the last 11 points to win the set 25-18 and close out the match over Milligan.

Kira Ryan led the way on offense, scoring eight kills on 16 swings with just two errors. That amounted to a .375 attacking percentage. Riley Brinn and Bella Devoti had five kills, apiece, while Taylor Brinn and Erin Littleton provided three each. Faith Wilson was responsible for 20 of the team's 24 assists.

Grace Sanderson's 11 digs led the charge defensively, with R. Brinn picking up 10 attacks to place second. Olivia Schoenstra had five digs, as well. Littleton tallied three block assists, and T. Brinn, Addison Varney, Devoti, Wilson and Ryan all had one. In addition, Wilson and R. Brinn both had one solo block.

Game 2 – Mobile 3, Milligan 0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-14)

The Buffaloes' second contest of the day against Mobile was a difficult one against a team that made the NAIA Opening Round last season. From the first serve, the Buffs could not keep up with the offensive firepower of the Rams, who led by as many as 16 points at 23-7. They finished the set at 25-11.

A similar script was followed in the second frame, as Mobile worked their way to a 21-7 lead before the Buffs fell by the exact same score as the first set, 25-11.

The third set concluded at 25-14, as Milligan never scored more than two straight points at any time during the final set.

Statistically, the Buffs had T. Brinn as their top contributor on offense with five kills on 11 attempts. Littleton had four kills and R. Brinn had three. Wilson's 12 assists were all but one that were tallied in the match.

Wilson's seven digs paced the squad, and Sanderson added six of her own. Four digs from each of the Brinn sisters, and three pickups apiece from Littleton and Schoenstra rounded out the list of multiple-dig contributions. Courtney Nye had a pair of block assists, as well as a solo stuff. Single block assists were also tallied by T. Brinn, Littleton, Varney and Wilson.

The second day of the two-day tournament is on Saturday, as the Buffaloes are set to tussle with the Pensacola Christian (Fla.) Eagles at 12 p.m. and then the John Melvin (Fla.) Mohawks at 4 p.m.
