MILLIGAN, Tenn. — Milligan University's women's basketball team continued their pursuit of an undefeated Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) record on Wednesday evening inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse, where the Lady Buffs hosted the Bears of Truett McConnell University (Ga.). The Buffaloes' offense came to play, completing an 87-50 domination of the Bears.
Truett McConnell put up a valiant fight in the first frame, hitting on a stellar 6-of-13 clip from the field. The two sides battled back-and-forth for the entirety of the 10 minutes, and neither team had more than a five-point lead at any juncture. Milligan led 19-14 with 0:30 left to go in the quarter before TMU tallied two more points with 0:05 remaining to make it 19-16 in favor of MU after one.
Milligan created some separation in the second period, reaching a 12-point lead with 5:11 left in the frame, and eventually extending that edge to 19 points at quarter's end, 44-25. A 25-9 overall score in the period was a direct result of the Buffaloes sinking shots at an otherworldly 11-of-16 rate. On the other side, the Bears struggled mightily, hitting only four field goals on 15 total attempts.
Much of the same was achieved by Milligan in the third quarter, with the Buffaloes especially benefitting from a 10-0 run from the 4:52 mark to the 2:05 mark in the period. A 67-38 lead was taken into the fourth period by the Buffs after a 9-of-18 third-quarter shooting conversion rate. For TMU, a 6-of-15 mark did not cut it, as they trailed 23-13 in the quarter.
In the fourth, Milligan got some playing time for their extended bench, as 14 players had minutes in the contest. Even so, they shot a strong 8-of-13 from the field for 20 points in comparison to 12 for TMU on 5-of-18 shooting. At the battle's end, it was the Lady Buffs who came out with an 87-50 win.
McKenna Myers had a prolific day scoring the rock, putting up 20 points to lead the Buffs. She was dialed in, hitting 7-of-12 and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. she also made three of Milligan's four free throws in the tilt.
Makenzie Bremer came away with 13 points in the win with a 6-of-8 line.
Semaj Clark picked up 11 on 5-of-9 from the field and
Lina Lyon tallied 10 on 4-of-9 with a pair of threes.
Kenzie Campbell went 3-of-5 from distance for nine points.
Bailey McCoy scored her first career basket as a member of the Buffaloes, as well.
A total of 26 assists were passed out by Milligan in the triumph, with five of them coming from both Clark and Campbell. Lyon and
Nina Lovelace each provided four assists for the squad and
Callie Reeder had three. Bremer supplied two and Myers,
Cora Browning and
Dachelle Lucas made up the remaining three.
Clark's seven rebounds paced the Lady Buffs, while
Naomi Atchley hauled in six. Campbell snatched five backboards, and both Lyon and
Lexi Ervin brought in four. Myers, Bremer and
Romy Bos tallied three apiece, and were followed by both Reeder and Lovelace with two each. Browning and McCoy had the other two rebounds.
Clark had a stat-sheet stuffing day, racking up a trio of rejections and two steals for her stat line. Myers and Lovelace both stole the orange on two occasions, and Bremer totaled one block and one theft. McCoy, Browning and Atchley also each sent back a shot.
The streak of conference games played without a loss now stands at 11 this season, as the Buffs (12-6, 11-0 AAC) now look forward to a road test on Saturday, Jan. 17 in Columbia, S.C. against the Koalas of Columbia College.
