Lady Buffs Basketball Rides Stellar First Quarter to Triumph over Alice Lloyd

MILLIGAN, Tenn. — The second contest of the Milligan University women's basketball season took place on Tuesday night, as the Buffaloes hosted the Eagles of Alice Lloyd College inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. After a stellar first quarter, the Buffs never gave up the lead, eventually winning by a 79-63 final tally.

Milligan put up a 21-3 run over the first 6:42 of game time, vaulting themselves into a dominant position. For the rest of the period, ALC battled back to the tune of a 9-5 Marvin in their favor. Milligan shot 10-of-18 from the field, while the Eagles made just five of their 17 tries.

Alice Lloyd outscored MU in the second quarter, 16-14, as the Buffaloes struggled to convert shots. Just a 5-of-15 shooting mark was reached by the Buffs, while ALC made 6-of-14 to cut their deficit to 12 points at the half. It was a 40-28 game at the intermission.

It was more of the same for the Buffaloes' offense in the third, as they converted on just four field goals out of their 13 attempts. The visitors limped similarly into the fourth quarter with just a 5-of-13 third-quarter conversion rate. A 16-16 period put the score at 56-44 with 10 minutes left to be played.

A better fourth quarter would follow, with the Buffaloes making seven field goals. Milligan staved off a run early, when Alice Lloyd cut the deficit to nine points with 6:33 remaining. They did so by scoring nine straight points of their own to lead by 18, 71-53, with 2:38 to go. They would then coast to a 79-63 win over the visiting Eagles.

Callie Reeder's 14 points led the team, as she converted on 6-of-11 from the floor. Makenzie Bremer scored 11 points. Jenna Hare was also in double-figures with 10 points, five of which came from the charity stripe. All seven of the other players who took part in the game had multiple points, as well. Kabria Revels (9), Lina Lyon (8), Caroline Krueger (7), Zoe Rector (7), Ellie Linx (5), Elivia Moore (5) and Dachelle Lucas (3) rounded out the scoring. The team shot 26-for-61 (42.6%) in the game and made nine threes. They went 18-of-28 from the free-throw line.

Hare had eight assists to lead the Buffs, followed by Lyon with six. Bremer also had multiple dimes, passing out four, while Reeder and Revels were credited with one apiece.

It was Hare's night on the boards, as she brought in 11 to finish off a double-double. Krueger hauled in eight and Reeder grabbed seven. Bremer (4), Moore (4), Lyon (3), Linx (3), Lucas (3), Rector (2) and Revels (2) all had multiple backboards. That meant that all players on Milligan's roster had multiple rebounds, which supports the statistical advantage the team had against ALC, winning 49-32 in that category as a squad.

The two blocks in the game by the Buffaloes were tallied by Reeder, who protected the rim beautifully. The team had eight steals, as well, as Lyon had a pair. Reeder, Bremer, Hare, Krueger, Revels and Moore (in her first game against her former team) all had one steal.

The Buffaloes (2-0) will hit the road for the first time this season on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m., as they face off with the No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders in a neutral-site matchup at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky.
