Buffs Women's Basketball Wins at Bluefield, Nearing AAC Regular-Season Title

BLUEFIELD, Va. – Milligan University's women's basketball team entered Thursday night's matchup at Bluefield University (Va.) with just three tilts remaining on their regular-season schedule. The Lady Buffs took care of their business on the road, taking home a 34-point win over the Rams, 89-55.

Both squads struggled on offense to begin the battle, as the Buffs went just 6-of-17 from the field for 19 total points. They also shot 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Bluefield only made four field goals, taking 14 shots in the opening period. Milligan grabbed the lead 5-0 and ended up extending it to a 19-7 lead at the conclusion of the first.

The two sides improved greatly on offense in the second period, as they both converted on 60% or more of their attempts. The Buffs canned nine of their 14 tries in the period, including 2-of-4 from deep. The Rams scored 16 points on a 7-of-11 conversion rate from the field. Even with those strong numbers, Bluefield was outscored 26-16 in the period, mostly because they were outrebounded 8-1 in the period. At the break, Milligan held a significant 45-25 lead.

In the third, Milligan separated, scoring a 29-13 edge over the next 10 minutes. They nailed 11-of-17 from the field, while Bluefield made only five of their 18 attempts. With the huge quarter, the Buffaloes grabbed a massive lead at 74-38 with one period left to be played.

The fourth quarter provided an opportunity to rest many of Milligan's regular contributors, as they coasted to a simple 89-55 win after trailing the Rams 17-15 in the last quarter of the contest.

Four of Milligan's 15 players who competed in the contest reached double-figures in scoring, with Semaj Clark tallying 16 on a 5-of-15 shooting night. McKenna Myers went 4-for-8 and poured in 12 points. Both Kenzie Campbell and Makenzie Bremer tallied 11 points in the contest on a combined 7-of-10 mark from the floor.

Campbell led the Buffaloes in assists, dishing out five in the triumph. Lina Lyon, Naomi Atchley, Caroline Krueger and Nina Lovelace all tallied two dimes in the win. Clark, Bremer, Lexi Ervin and Callie Reeder rounded out the list of distributors.

Clark hauled in eight boards to lead the squad, while Campbell grabbed seven of them. Atchley snatched four, Myers and Lovelace brought in three apiece, and Bremer, Lyon, Ervin, Reeder, Krueger and Kabria Revels all had two backboards. Bailey McCoy reeled in the last of the team's rebounds.

Myers had a team-best three steals, while Bremer nabbed a pair. Campbell, Lyon, Atchley and Cora Browning notched one each. Reeder sent back two shots in the victory, and Clark provided the other block.

Now, with just two Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) tilts left, the Buffaloes (18-7, 17-1 AAC) are on the verge of claiming the regular-season crown for the conference. Their next bout comes on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Columbia International (S.C.).
