WEST POINT, Ga. – On Wednesday, the Milligan University softball team continued their 2026 campaign with a doubleheader at Point University. After stealing a triumph in the day's first tilt, the Buffs dropped the latter bout to split the day and move to 2-4 for the young season.
A slow-moving game that saw the first 15 batters of the game retired finally got moving in the bottom of the third, when the hosts led off with a single and subsequently sacrificed that runner to third on two bunts. A two-out RBI double made it 1-0 after three in the Skyhawks' favor.
Milligan finally broke through with their first hit of the game in the top of the fifth, as
Jordan Roulettwheeler led off the frame with a single to left field. After one out was recorded,
Lily Frazier walked to put two on with one away. Then,
Alana Parsons mashed a two-run triple to center field, driving in both Roulettwheeler and Frazier to make it 2-1.
Sadie Shoun would then reach base on a fielding error, allowing Parsons to make it 3-1 by crossing the plate.
Point did not quit, scoring one more run in the bottom of the fifth. A two-out double, followed by a second two-base hit, made it just a 3-2 game entering the final two innings of the battle.
From there, the Buffs held their ground and closed out a gritty 3-2 win in the first game of the afternoon.
The Skyhawks put the first run on the scoreboard again in the second game, managing a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second frame.
Another run on a RBI groundout would be scored in the bottom of the third inning by Point, as it was a 2-0 game entering the fourth.
Two additional runs came across for the hosts in the bottom of the fifth, both on a two-run homerun following a hit-by-pitch. It was a 4-0 game with a pair of innings remaining.
The Buffaloes made their push in the top of the sixth, as a one-out double by Frazier preceded a single by
Ashley Worley. Then, with runners at the corners,
Kaylee Oler hit an infield single, driving in Frazier for Milligan's first run. Oler would then steal second, putting two runners in scoring position. A
Haley Vigil RBI groundout to second base made it 4-2, and then a wild pitch allowed Oler to cross the dish for the third run of the inning.
Unfortunately for the Buffaloes, they immediately gave those runs back to the Skyhawks, plus one. An RBI single, a run-scoring fielder's choice, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly gave Point a five-run advantage at 8-3 after six.
Milligan would put a single run on the board in the top of the seventh, as
Hannah Bates ripped a single into left field to score Roulettwheeler, but that would be all that the Buffs would score in the frame, eventually falling 8-4 in the contest to settle for a split.
Parsons (2-for-3, 3B, 2 RBI, R) and Bates (2-for-3, RBI) were the two players in the lineup who had two hits on the day. Frazier had the only other extra-base hit for the team, while Oler, Worley and Roulettweeler had the remaining three hits out of the team's eight combined through two contests.
It was a standout performance from the pitching staff in the opener, as
Bree Presnell hurled six innings of two-run work. She allowed seven hits and struck out one batter in her time in the circle.
Katelin Secrist allowed a hit in her one inning, but struck out two batters and a earned her first save of the season as the closer of the tilt.
Secrist then got the start in game two, allowing four runs on four hits across 4.1 innings. She had a strikeout and walked two. Roulettwheeler relieved her in the contest, pitching the last 1.2 innings and giving up four runs on three hits with a walk allowed.
Now, Milligan (2-4) finally begins Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Montreat College in Black Mountain, N.C. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m., as the team looks to get off on the right foot in AAC play.
