Game Recap: Women's Flag Football |

Seven Interceptions Power Milligan to Victory Over King

BRISTOL, Tenn. – On Wednesday, the No. 9 Milligan University flag football program was on the road in Bristol, Tenn. for a matchup against King University Tornadoes. The Lady Buffs' perfect record was on the line as they looked to add another win to the books. They did just that, scoring early and often while collecting seven interceptions en route to a 64-12 victory.

Milligan wasted no time putting points on the board, as on the fourth play of the game, Lilly Rumrill read the quarterback and jumped a passing lane for an interception and took it all the way back to the end zone. However, a failed one-point conversion would keep the score at 6-0 after 30 seconds of action.

On the ensuing King drive, the Tornadoes moved into the red zone after being aided by a Buff penalty on fourth down. However, it was Rumrill again who brought a close to the King drive, as she notched her second interception of the first quarter.

The Buffs were backed up in their territory and were forced to punt after three plays. The punt flipped the field, and Ashton Whearley picked off King's quarterback on the second play of the drive to set up Milligan on the King 22-yard line.

With optimal field position from the interception, a Keyser to Rumrill connection for 16 yards got the Buffs down to the King 1-yard line. With all the momentum in MU's favor, Keyser flipped the ball to Sam Urso in the end zone to extend Milligan's lead to 12-0. The Buffs elected to go for two and were unsuccessful after the score.

Following a three-and-out, Milligan regained possession at the 5:10 mark of the first quarter. Then, a Carsen Bigelow reception and Jasmine McDowell rush set up Whearley for a 22-yard touchdown reception. A one-point conversion gave Milligan a comfortable margin of 19-0 at the 3:40 mark of the first quarter.

King scored the final touchdown of the first quarter, as the Tornadoes moved the ball down the field and capped the drive with a 24-yard pass and catch, bringing them within 13 points after the first quarter of action.

It looked as if the Tornadoes were going to completely turn the tide after forcing a Buff punt to start the second period. However, another interception by the Milligan defense, this time from Parker Bridges, quickly changed things and set the Buffs up at the Tornadoes 18-yard line.

Milligan wasted no time scoring after the interception, as on the third play of the drive, Krista Quinn made a 3-yard grab for a touchdown, and a one-point conversion put MU ahead 26-6 early in the second.

On the next Milligan drive with six minutes left before halftime, K. Quinn scored for the second time on an 18-yard reception. The score put the game in control of the Buffs, growing their lead to 32-6.

The Buffs were not done with the first half scoring, as on the next Tornado drive, Parker Bridges got a pick six to blow the game open 38-6. However, neither side would score after this in the first half and the lead remained at 38-6 going into the halftime break.

Coming out of the intermission, Milligan got the ball first and continued to impress offensively by going the length of the field on only five plays for a touchdown. The score came when K. Quinn scored for the third time on a 10-yard reception. A successful one-point conversion allowed MU to set the cruise control with a 45-6 advantage.

At the 13:07 mark of the third quarter, Abbylin LaPrise came away with an interception and took it all the way back for a Milligan touchdown, extending the lead to 51-6.

Five minutes later, the Buffs continued the dominant offensive performance by scoring on a quarterback option where Keyser ran for 7 yards and lateralled the ball to K. Quinn who took the remaining 8 yards for a touchdown. Then, a one-point conversion made the score 58-6 with eight minutes and 32 seconds to play in the third.

The scoring would halt for the rest of the third quarter, as each team scored their final touchdowns in the final period. The Buffs touchdown came first at the 13:17 mark when Keyser found Whearley for a 22-yard touchdown. King added their second score of the day at the 7:05 mark. From there, neither side was able to add any points and Milligan came away with a 64-12 victory on the road.

Keyser dominated through the air, completing 28 of 37 passes for 267 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. Her longest completion of the day went for 22 yards, and she was sacked twice on the afternoon.

The Milligan receiving game was led by Krista Quinn, who hauled in nine catches for 86 yards and three touchdowns. Whearley caught the ball six times for 75 yards and a touchdown, and Rumrill had five catches for 49 yards. LaPrise had two receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown, and Caitlin Quinn added three catches for 20 yards. Urso had three catches for four yards and a score on the afternoon.

Keyser led the way rushing the ball with six carries for 12 yards and a touchdown. Whearley and McDowell each had two carries for 11 yards.

Defensively, the Lady Buffs intercepted seven passes on the afternoon, returning them for a combined 95 yards and three touchdowns. Bridges and Rumrill each had two interceptions, while LaPrise, K. Quinn, and Whearley each added one. The squad also recorded two sacks from Urso and K. Quinn. Annabelle Rhodes led the team with eight total flag pulls on the day. Bridges had six and Anderson had five, while LaPrise had four. Mykelah Davis, Christain Davis, and Ashley Wilson each had three. C. Quinn and Padilla and Rumrill each had two, while McDowell, Urso, Bigelow, Chloe Jackson, K. Quinn, and Courtney Cummings also had pulls on the afternoon.

Next for Milligan (13-0) will be another matchup with King University on Tuesday March 24 after the game scheduled against Wittenberg on Saturday has been cancelled. The matchup will take place on Milligan's home turf of Citizens Bank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
