Milligan College, Tenn. (Dec. 5, 2009) --- The Milligan College women's basketball team knocked off former AAC school Covenant (Ga.) College Saturday afternoon in Steve Lacy Fieldhouse, 74-53. ÂÂ
It took some time for the Lady Buffs to get heated up as they were scoreless through the first three minutes of the contest, but after a bucket from junior center
Heather Mandela it was smooth sailing for the women in white. Milligan cruised to a 41-25 lead at the break, compliments of an 11-3 run in the closing minutes of the half on 16-of-35 shooting from the floor. ÂÂ
After the intermission, Milligan picked up right where they left off as they extended their lead to as much as 32 points midway through the second half. For the game, the Lady Buffs shot 44 percent from the field, as opposed to the Lady Scots 30 percent performance. ÂÂ
Leading the Lady Buffs offensively was
Alisha Mainer's 14 point and eight rebound performance. Her counterpart in the paint, Mandela, pitched in 10 points, five rebounds and a team high four assists, while former Lady Hilltopper
Jaimee Hill tacked on 12 points in the effort. Senior point-guard
Brit White had tallied nine points. ÂÂ
“This was a really good win for us,” commented head Coach
Rich Aubrey. “Our run to end the first half helped get our momentum going heading into the second half. We came out strong in the second and were able to extend on our lead. It was a very good team effort today.”
With the win, the Lady Buffs improve to 9-3 on the year and remain at 3-0 to lead the AAC standings. The Covenant women slip to 2-5 overall with the loss. ÂÂ
The Lady Buffs travel to Brenau (Ga.) University to take on the Golden Tigers Saturday, Dec. 12, for a 2 p.m. start time.  ÂÂ
