Milligan College, Tenn. (August 29, 2009) --- The Milligan  College volleyball team was perfect on day two of the Milligan Mountain Madness  tournament as they defeated Southern Virginia University (Buena Vista, Va.) 3-1  and the University of the Cumberlands 3-0. 
The Lady Buffs faced off  against the Lady Knights in the opening match of the day and grabbed an early  lead, winning the first set 25-19. Southern Virginia squeaked by during the  second match 25-22, but the Lady Buffs took commanding leads (25-17 and 25-16)  in both of the next sets to clinch the match.   
Freshman Chelsea Spivey (Gate City, Va.) proved herself once again to  be a dominant force on the court, as she led the Lady Buffs with 33 assists,  four kills and two aces. Tennessee High product, senior Kalyn Perrigan  (Bristol, Tenn.), paced the Lady Buffs offensively with 11 kills during  the first match. Sophomore Morgan Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.)  tallied 19 digs to lead the squad. 
During the final game of the  tournament, the Lady Buffs knocked off the Lady Patriots in similar fashion,  winning the first two sets 25-20. In the third set, Milligan came out firing and  put the Lady Patriots away early as they won 25-15 to clinch the match.     
Spivey, an all-tournament team selection, chalked up 29 assists and  seven kills in the final match of Milligan's Mountain Madness tournament.  Rutledge led the team in digs with 16 digs, while junior Bianca Burnett  (Cookeville, Tenn.) was just one behind with 15 digs of her own.  
“We bounced back from two losses last night from two very competitive  teams,” commented Head Coach Doneva Bays. “I was happy that the  girls came out ready to play today and really showed their 'die-hard' attitude.  Our overall performance was good and I am looking forward to us beginning our  regular season.”
The Lady Buffs wrapped up their own tournament with a  record of 2-2, and a third place finish. 
Milligan hits the road next  week to take on Mars Hill College (Mars Hill, N.C.) for non-conference  action on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
