Milligan drops heartbreaker in final seconds

Kingsport, Tenn. (Sept. 29, 2009) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team fell to the Lady Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University Thursday night by an overtime final of 2-1.

After a scoreless first half, the Lady Buffs took a quick lead from a goal by freshman Jacklyn Orange (Shelbyville, Ky.) in the 46th minute. Sophomore Lauren Lameier (Woodstock, GA) sent a rocket that just missed off the crossbar, but Orange was there to kick in the rebound giving the Lady Buffs the advantage.

Milligan all but won the game when Lady Warrior Brooke Davis found the back of the net off of Rosy Escobar's corner kick with just two seconds remaining in regulation sending the game into overtime.

In the 91st minute, sophomore Nine Henriksson (Goteborg, Sweden) broke the Southern Wesleyan defense but her shot missed just over the goal keeping the game tied 1-1. Two minutes later, Lady Warrior Carissa McNab kicked in a goal to finish off the Lady Buffs and give Southern Wesleyan the win.

“It's hard to lose in overtime again,” commented Head Coach Lisa Buckley. “The goal in the closing seconds definitely took the wind out of our sails. It's good to have a tune-up game though, as we get back into conference play on Thursday.”

The Lady Buffs travel to Barbourville, Ky., to take on the Lady Bulldogs of Union College on Thursday, Oct. 1. This AAC matchup is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
