Lady Buffs fall in five set thriller

Montreat, N.C. (Sept. 30, 2010) --- The Milligan College volleyball team came up short in a five set thriller on Thursday night as they fell 3-2 to Montreat College in Montreat, N.C.

After falling 25-20 in the first set, Milligan rallied back to take the second set by a score of 30-28. The Lady Cavaliers took the third set 25-16, but the Lady Buffs came back to take the fourth set 25-22. In the pivotal fifth set, Milligan was unable to take advantage of a match point as they fell 17-15.

Chelsea Spivey (Gate City, Va.) recorded 43 assists, 18 digs and seven kills. Former Dobyns-Bennett standout Morgan Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) had 18 kills and 18 digs, while Bianca Burnett (Cookeville, Tenn.) had 18 digs and 12 kills. Holly English (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Katelin Henson (Kingsport, Tenn.) had 18 and 12 digs, respectively.

“I'm really happy with how we battled tonight,” Head Coach Doneva Bays said. “We had chances to pull away, but we couldn't capitalize on them. However, I am really excited about the fight I saw in my team.”

With the loss, Milligan drops to 13-8 overall and 5-2 in AAC play.

Milligan returns to action on Friday, Oct. 1, when they host Tennessee Wesleyan. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
