Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Milligan falls to rival King

Milligan College, Tenn. (Nov. 29, 2010) --- Despite being in different conferences this season, the rivalry between Milligan College and King College mens' basketball teams has not waned. At the end of a hard fought battle, King secured a 110-88 victory over the Buffs inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Monday night.

King struck first in the game on two free-throws by Brian Hewitt, but a field-goal from Cordero Seymour (Inagua, Bahamas) would even the score 2-2. Milligan would capture their first lead of the evening on a 3-pointer by Tim Harper (Catawba, N.C.), putting the Buffs up 6-4, but King would quickly bounce back with a 2-point field goal from Clarence Smith to tie the game at 6-6. Two free-throws from Seymour extended the Buffs' lead to 8-6, but Milligan then succumbed to a 6-point run by the Tornadoes.

The game remained close throughout the entire first half with the lead shifting four times between the teams, but a combination of perimeter shooting and free throws allowed King to have a 6-point edge going into the second half with a score of 53-47.

King took control of the second half going 23-for-32 on total field goals, five of which being 3-pointers. Defensively, the Tornadoes limited the Buffs to 23 shots, which helped them extend their lead by as much as 27 points during the second half.

Freshman Kyle Grisby (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Buffs total offense with 22 points, while Justin Sylvester (Kingsport, Tenn.) led with eight assists. Grisby, Sylvester and Harper led the team in rebounds with four apiece.

With the loss, Milligan falls to 2-5 on the season.

Before the game, Milligan Head Golf Coach Tony Wallingford announced that the Appalachian Athletic Conference's Spring Women's Golf Championship has been named in honor of Milligan's president and first lady, Don and Clarinda Jeanes, to commemorate their contributions to the school. President Jeanes, who announced in October his plan to retire at the end of the current academic year, was instrumental in launching a women's golf program at Milligan in 2009. Milligan will host the championship at the Elizabethton Golf Club on April 4-5, 2011.
