No. 25 Milligan throttles past Brevard

Milligan College, Tenn. (March 31, 2010) --- No. 25 Milligan College stampeded past NCAA Division II Brevard College Wednesday evening on Anglin Field as the Buffs took the doubleheaders 13-1 and 9-5, respectively.

The Milligan squad jumped out to an early lead courtesy of a two-run first inning and a nine-run second inning. The Buffs tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth to knock off the Tornadoes in five innings.

Earning the win on the hill for the Buffs was senior Frank Newcomb (Knoxville, Tenn.) in five innings of work. In the effort, Newcomb only gave up one earned run on three hits, while striking out four batters. For the year, Newcomb is 3-1.

Offensively, Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.) led the way going a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Dustin Ford (Jonesborough, Tenn.) was 2-for-3 at the plate including two RBIs and two runs scored. Matt Lyle (Hendersonville, Tenn.) also had a perfect outing in the opener going 3-for-3 with a RBI.

In the nightcap, Milligan mirrored their play in Game 1 marking in the first inning and using a seven spot in the second to pull ahead of the visitors. Brevard tried to muster a comeback in the top of the sixth, but were unsuccessful as the Buffs went on to win it.

Grabbing his first career win as Buff in Game 2 was freshman Sean Robinson (Knoxville, Tenn.). Robinson pitched six complete innings scattering three hits and yielding three earned runs while striking out five.

At the plate in the nightcap, Ricky Morgan (Johnson City, Tenn.) went 1-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs. Ford also posted good numbers in the second game going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

For the year, Milligan improves to 21-9 and remain at 10-2 in the league.

Milligan hosts AAC newcomer Reinhardt (Ga.) College Friday for the opener of the league series with the Eagles. The first contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., with the series finally to follow on Saturday at 1 p.m.
