Buffs, Cavs split in AAC twin bill

Wise, Va. (April 25, 2010) --- The Milligan College baseball team took the first of two in AAC play Sunday against the Cavaliers of UVA-Wise 3-1, but the Cavs avenged the opening loss getting the best of the Buffs in the nightcap 5-3 on Stallard Field.

Wise marked early in the bottom of the first to take an early lead over the visiting Buffs, but a three spot in the third inning would catapult Milligan past the Cavs. Both teams remained silent for the final four and a half innings to give Milligan the win and the series.

Milligan ace Aaron Dorriety (Pickens, S.C.) got the nod and the win in Game 1 going six complete innings. Dorriety scattered five hits and yielded an unearned run in the appearance, while striking out a season-high nine batters. For the season Dorriety improves to 6-1.

Coming in to seal the deal was Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) who earned the save as he struck out the side in the top of the seventh to fend off the Cavs. Trivett's save was his 13th of the year which ties the Milligan saves record that he set a year ago.

Offensively, Ricky Morgan (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 1-for-2 with a RBI, while his high school teammate Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.) also had a good day at the plate going 1-for-3 in the opener with a run scored. Also providing some offense was Wes Anderson (Elizabethton, Tenn.) who went a perfect 1-for-1 with a run scored.

In the nightcap, Wise broke the 1-1 stalemate in the bottom of the sixth by bringing four Cavs across the plate. Milligan tried to muster a comeback in the top of the seventh as they brought in two runners, but were unsuccessful as the Cavs went on to win it.

Shawn Ray (York, S.C.) was credited with the loss in Game 2 in 5.1 innings of work. Ray gave up five runs on seven hits, two of which were earned. For the season, Ray slips to 6-3.

At the plate in the closer, Morgan went 2-for-4 with a RBI, while Kendall Williams (Dillon, S.C.) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

For the year, the Buffs go to 28-15 overall and 16-8 in the league.

Milligan travels to Cumberland (Tenn.) University Tuesday, April 27, for a non-conference doubleheader against the Bulldogs. Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., CST.
