Milligan extends win streak against Union

Milligan College, Tenn. (April 7, 2010) --- The Milligan College softball team extended their current win streak to seven games Wednesday afternoon against AAC foe Union (Ky.) College on Anglin Field. The Lady Buffs took the opener 4-2 and the nightcap 4-1.

After a scoreless two and a half innings, Milligan broke the stalemate by bringing in three Lady Buffs to take a commanding lead over the Lady Bulldogs. Union would rally in the top of the fourth putting up a two-spot on the board and closing the gap with the home team. The Lady Buffs used an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to finish off the visitors.

Earning the win for the Lady Buffs inside the pitcher's circle was junior Sidney Burns (Tallahassee, Fla.) in seven complete innings. Burns gave up two runs on 13 hits, both of which were earned. For the year, Burns is 10-5.

Leading Milligan at the plate was sophomore Jessica Fix (Chesapeake, Va.) who was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Freshman Morgan Holbrook (Knoxville, Tenn.) was also 1-for-3 with a RBI, while senior Jessica Russell (New Market, Tenn.) was 1-for-2 with a run scored.

In the second game, the Lady Buffs brought in a run in the bottom of the third, only to be matched by Union in the top of the next inning. However, Milligan brought in three Lady Buffs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break the 1-1 deadlock against the Lady Bulldogs and take the series.

Earning the win in the second game was Ryann Musick (Elizabethton, Tenn.) in six innings of work. Musick scattered eight hits and only yielded a run, while striking out four.

Offensively, Fix was 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Lady Buffs. Holbrook also performed well in the nightcap going 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.

For the year, the Lady Buffs improve to 20-9 overall and 8-4 in the AAC. With the loss, Union falls to 12-10 overall and 6-4 in the league.

Milligan takes the field Saturday afternoon for the AAC doubleheader against the Lady Cavs of UVA-Wise on Anglin Field. The first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
