Salem, Va. (September 1, 2010) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team traveled to Roanoke College for their first road game of the year, and came away with a 1-1 tie after two overtimes in a nonconference matchup Wednesday night at Donald J. Kerr Stadium in Salem, Va.
The Lady Buffs jumped out to an early lead when Rachel Martin (Blountville, Tenn.) scored her third goal of the season in the third minute of the contest. The score remained 1-0 until the 84th minute when Roanoke found the goal to tie the game and force overtime. During the two overtimes, the Lady Buffs were unable to break the stalemate.
Defensively, Heather Crumplen (Courtice, Ontario) had an outstanding game at the goalkeeper position. Out of 10 Maroon shots on goal, Crumplen recorded nine saves.
“It is disappointing to not get the win especially since we led most of the game, but Roanoke is a very good side,” Head Coach Lisa Buckley said. “We didn't play great, but we battled hard.”
With the tie, Milligan moves to 1-0-1 on the year, while Roanoke starts the season at 0-0-1.
The Lady Buffs return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Lees-McRae College. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
