Milligan volleyball splits at Rumpke Invite

Georgetown, Ky. (Sept, 10 2010) --- The Milligan College volleyball team went 1-1 during the first day of the Rumpke Invitational in Georgetown, Ky., on Friday with a 3-0 win over Indiana University-Southeast (New Albany, Ind.) and a 3-0 loss to host Georgetown College.

In the first game, the Lady Buffs knocked off Indiana University-Southeast 3-0. In the first set, Milligan jumped out to a 25-20 set victory then pulled away 25-14 in the second set. The Lady Buffs secured the win with a 25-21 victory in the third set.

Chelsea Spivey
(Gate City, VA) had 29 assists and seven digs. Kendra Fiddler (Colorado Springs, CO) had 12 kills and four blocks, while Emilee Hale (Morristown, TN) had nine kills. Morgan Rutledge (Kingsport, TN) and Erin Biddle (Newport, TN)  had 19 and 11 digs, respectively.

In the second game, Milligan was unable to keep pace with the 18th ranked Tigers of Georgetown. In the first set, the Lady Buffs fought hard, but came up short 25-20. Milligan then fell 25-10 and 25-18 in the second and third set.

Spivey had 19 assists, while Bianca Burnett (Cookeville, TN) and Fiddler had seven kills apiece. Rutledge had 10 digs.

“Overall, I'm very happy with how we played,” Head Coach Doneva Bays said. “Georgetown is a very good team, and we just had a lot of unforced errors today. We will work on those, and get right back at it tomorrow.”

The Lady Buffs move to 8-3 on the year.

Milligan returns to action tomorrow for the second day of the Rumpke Invitational. They open the day with Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, Mich.) at 10 a.m. The Lady Buffs will also square off against another opponent to be determined by pool play results.
